Home    Are You a First-Time Home Buyer?

Are you a first-time home buyer? Does the idea of buying a home stress you out? Whether you’re confident in your ability to do so, or you feel like you don’t know anything, it’s OK. We’re here to help you through the whole process so you can have a positive and easy experience.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind for purchasing your first home.

Consider What You Can Afford

Think about what you can afford in terms of upfront and monthly costs. You’ll need to have some sort of down payment and extra money to cover other upfront costs such as closing costs and fees. (CLICK HERE for some tips on saving for a down payment.)

You’ll also want to think about what you can afford once you’re actually moved in. Make sure your monthly mortgage payment is totally affordable. You’ll may also have other taxes and fees (for example HOA fees). You’re also now totally responsible when something breaks in your home. Try and have some cash saved away for moments like these.

Credit

Make sure your credit is looking up. Don’t open any new lines of credit or make any large purchases before applying for a loan. Getting a mortgage will be more difficult if your credit is suffering.

Finding a realtor who can help your search is important. You not only have someone there to help you throughout the whole process, but you don’t have to pay for their services (the seller pays both the listing and buying agent). It’s a no-brainer to have someone there to help you find exactly what you want. They’ll do it much quicker and easier that you would on your own.

With that being said, don’t just go with the first person you meet. Find someone you get a long with and you feel can really help you

Start hunting

Decide what you want in a home. What do you need to fit your lifestyle? Make a list of your needs and wants.

Look beyond just the home – look at the neighborhood and think of your day-to-day living and how it will fit.

Think in the future as well. What will you need from a home in the next few years. And then think about the resale value as well for when you’re ready to move.
