Home    Living in Your Home While it’s On the Market

It’s likely the case that when you put your home on the market, you’ll still be living in it until it’s sold. How are you supposed to keep your home looking amazing while living day-to-day? Here are a few tips to keep your home show-worthy while still living your life as normal as possible.

You will have to make some sacrifices.

It’s just a part of the deal when selling your home. Your home is no longer yours, it’s a product to be sold. You’ll have to pack up some items, keep your home clean, and give up time in your home for showings. Understand that selling your home is a process, and if you’re serious about selling you’ll have to make a few changes. This doesn’t mean that you have to live on eggshells for the next few weeks, this just means that a few things will be different until you sell and can move into your dream home.

Discuss with your agent good showing times and what would work best. Although this won’t always work out so nicely, having a guideline can be helpful for you and your agent.

Pack and Declutter

Pack up items that you won’t need for the next little bit. Maybe consider getting a storage unit for these items. Those Halloween decorations and beach toys aren’t going to be needed anytime soon. Put them in a box and pack them away. You’ll also want to pack away some furniture if possible. You don’t need three bookcases in the family room. Maybe shave it down to one or two. When showing your home, less is more! You don’t want your home to look cluttered. Get rid of personal and religious decorations. You want your home to look neutral.

As you’re doing this, keep in mind what you’ll need in the next few weeks and what you won’t. We’re not asking you to put away something that you’ll wish you had next week. Buyers do understand that you need to live, but the less cluttered your home looks, the quicker it will sell.

Clean

This doesn’t mean that you’re not allowed to make messes. Just make sure that your home is clean when showings happen. A word of advise: have a quick and easy cleaning routine to prepare for showings. If a buyer wants to do a showing this afternoon, you want to have a cleaning routine that won’t take long, but can get your home looking its best. Have a spot in the cabinets for kitchen appliances and bathroom items. For the kitchen and bathrooms, you want the counters looking clean. Make sure that you have a spot to store everything real quick for tours.

Clean as you go. Making sure that dishes are cleaned and put away, counters are wiped and floors are swept and vacuumed everyday can help you in the long run. That way, cleaning up for a showing won’t be such a big hassle.
